Tastes of the town
On a slim budget, delicious pickings around the city are fit for gourmet royalty |

| "3) Madras Mahal, 104 Lexington Ave., 684-4010, a South Indian vegetarian establishment, has a wide array of Gujarati specialties. The buffet is generous, and you can get a shatteringly crisp dosa (lentil-rice flour crepe) with filling and accompaniments for $8.95. Afterward, it's only sensible to drop in almost across the street at the renowned spice shop," |

| 13. MADRAS MAHAL. 104 Lexington Avenue, 684-4010. This progenitor of the current kosher Indian vegetarian fad, which claims five restaurants in Curry Hill alone, drifted into mediocrity a few years back, but has returned to top form with a refurbished dining room and amplified service. The $6.95 lunch buffet is the best in the city, and the crispy masala dosa is huge enough to justify its Manhattan price. |
